The representatives of the MSU Wharton Center of Performing Arts invite you to an exclusive free virtual conversation with jazz and soul singer Alicia Olatuja on Wednesday, February 23, at 6pm.
This event will occur in advance of Olatuja’s performance at Wharton Center on March 2, 2022, at 7:30PM. The performance will focus on the rich contributions of a diverse selection of female composers. Intuition: Songs from the Minds of Women celebrates the achievements of a long list of esteemed female artists such as Sade, Tracy Chapman, Kate Bush, Brenda Russell, and many more while offering a musical perspective unique to Olatuja.
Praised by the New York Times as “a singer with a strong and luscious tone and an amiably regal presence on stage”, Alicia Olatuja has been astounding audiences with her exquisite vocals, artistic versatility, and captivating demeanor. She first came into the national spotlight in 2013 while performing as the featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Barack Obama’s Second Inauguration.
Like so many singers before her, Olatuja’s talent was shaped in the church. She says, “Church music, sacred music, is not about you…In a sense, it’s music that the singer uses to point the listener to the divine. So, you’re using yourself as a prism; it passes through you but points in a different direction.”
