James Madison College (JMC) Welcome Reception & Student Organization Fair

Club Spartan, 3rd Floor Case Hall

2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

JMC faculty and staff will be on hand to welcome you and your families. Visit with various JMC student organizations and find out how to get involved during your first year. All JMC first-year students need to pick up t-shirts and name tags at this time.You will need to wear the t-shirt & name tag for Monday and Tuesday’s activities.

One Book One Community

East Lansing High School Theater, 509 Burcham Drive

6:00 p.m.

Meet author Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor as she discusses her experiences and talks about My Beloved World. Admission is first come, first served. Doors open at 5:15 p.m.

Admission guidelines for the Kick-Off Event:

  • There will be metal detector screening at the entrance and no bags, backpacks or purses will be permitted.
  • Community members will be seated on a first come, first served basis. A simulcast will be set up in the cafeteria in the event of an overflow crowd.
  • Pictures, flash photography or recordings (including those with cameras, cell phones, tablets and other devices) are not permitted.
  • There will not be a book signing; however, a limited number of signed books will be available to purchase.

Evening Activities

(Coordinated with Residence Education and Housing Services as an extension of community building activities.)

9:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.

  • Bowling at MSU, MSU Union Bldg. (9:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.), bowling at Spartan Lanes.
  • “Hawaiian Luau” Spartan Splash Party & Activities, IM West (9:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.) Splash on by for the Splash Party featuring the water polo team, dancing, games and the biggest Lip Sync Battle in the Big Ten.
  • Planetarium (9:00 p.m. -11:00 p.m.) Come explore the Planetarium and enjoy the “Startacular show”. Shows will run every 15 minutes.
  • MSU Crossroads of the World Event – MSU Museum (9:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.) Join the MSU Museum as they feature an exhibit to Puerto Rican culture in honor of Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor. The museum will also feature other cultural exhibits and activities.
  • Outside movie, hosted by UAB, Dem Hall Field (9:30 pm), featured movie will be Black Panther.
  • Ice Skating, Munn Ice Arena (10:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.) Come break the ice and meet new Spartans and join us for ice skating at Munn Ice Arena.
