Hate Has No Home Here Campaign

Definition:

Hate Has No Home Here is an initiative supported by MSU’s Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS) department, which began in the spring of 2018 following bias incidents on campus and anticipating the arrival of white nationalist, Richard Spencer. The social marketing campaign is focused on sharing the “Hate Has No Home Here” message across campus and social media with a goal of highlighting the REHS department and MSU’s intolerance on incidents of hate. Through the use of posters, stickers and digital graphics, students are encouraged to participate in sharing the Hate Has No Home Here message and take a stand when messages of hate occur on campus and in the community. Hate has No Home Here is not another performative pledge nor an opportunity to show optical allyship. We believe in a commitment that is supported by a tangible action plan. Hate Has No Home Here is a framework for equity and justice. Our “Hate Has No Home Here” initiative is a foundation of what we believe residence hall living must be.

  • Currently in the process of expanding our inclusive community statement “Hate Has No Home Here,” which includes providing the logo on our website with a link to our commitment and value regarding hate having no home here at MSU, printing stickers to distribute at our hall and apartment service center desks, increasing the use of the logo on dining hall table tents, distributing posters throughout the halls with information on reporting instances of harassment or discrimination, and some concepts which we are still investigating, including door clings and stickers on bathroom mirrors.
  • Working to include the logo in our Student Life and Engagement (SLE) email signature so that students will always have access to resources that will help support a culture of no hate.
  • We have also shared the Hate Has Has No Home Here graphics and pledge statement in multiple new student communication and in all of our New Student Orientation materials, and students will see this statement throughout the residence halls at move-in.
  • Expanding to student programming and action in 2021-22.
  • Engaging with SLE divisional communicators, SAS communications director, and the I3 communications manager to expand our reach to students on and off campus.
  • Recommend that the revamping and expansion of the HHNH is done in collaboration with the Inclusive Campus Initiative as the impact and context of this divisional project is broader than SLE. We would like to center the voice of students in this new revamped product and expression. HHNH should be a reflection of the work we do holistically across our division, not just a marketing campaign. This is a work in progress.
